12/31/2017 second street bluesI met you on second street when the snow was still spotless. the streetlights cast an orange glow over your skin and turned your eyes from a deep, dusty grey to a cold winter’s night. it was just us in that white city, the only thing keeping us company were crystalline ribbons of breath falling around us and the occasional breeze against our cheeks.
it started downtown, and as our nights became longer and friends turned into inseparable lovers, downtown turned into uptown, and uptown turned into the next town, and next thing we knew we were running out of exits to take. we were tangled in a crowded confusion that we mistook for love. it was a short lived euphoria we experienced in hushed I love you’s and nights we spent on the interstate looking for unfamiliar street signs to get us out of the town we had outgrown. soon enough it wasn’t just the city we had outgrown, but each other as well. suddenly your hands didn’t fit into mine as perfectly as they had before and my late night troubles became too much for you to bare. the road became lonely, with only surface-deep smiles that never reached our eyes the way they had when the snow was still falling and “I love you” became a phrase seldom spoke. as new snow falls and covers the tracks of nights that have long since passed, I linger still on second street, watching, waiting, hoping you grow back into me just as gracefully as you grew out.
